Constitution Day is coming up on September 17th and what better way to celebrate than teaching your child about the importance of the U.S. Constitution? It’s important for kids to understand why the Constitution matters to them. It’s a historical document that serves as the foundation for how our government works today. However, teaching the Constitution to kids is no easy task. It’s an overwhelming document that uses confusing language your child may struggle to understand just by reading it. Here are a few online resources and fun activities you can use to help your child understand why the constitution matters.
1. iCivics Education — Free Online Games
iCivics Education is a website that offers tons of free resources for learning about U.S. history and our government. To help your child learn about the constitution, visit The Constitution unit to find games and interactive quests. Try playing the Do I Have a Right and Branches of Power games. Or, try completing the America’s Founding Preambles and the Three Branches: Checks and Balances interactive quests.
2. Schoolhouse Rock Preamble Song
In 1975, Schoolhouse Rock released the “Preamble Song,” a short song with an animated music video to introduce kids to the Constitution and help them memorize the Preamble. Listen to this song, then you and your child work together to write a song about a different part of the Constitution. For example, you could write a song about the Bill of Rights or a specific amendment.
3. Ben’s Guide to the U.S. Government
Ben’s Guide to the U.S. Government is a fun website with free games, quests, and a glossary of terms to help your child learn all about the U.S. Government. Activities are organized by age and topic, making navigation easier and learning more accessible.
4. ConstitutionFacts.com — U.S. Constitution Fun Zone
ConstitutionFacts.com is an online resource for people of all ages to learn all about the Constitution. Check out the U.S. Constitution Fun Zone for age appropriate activities to do with your child, including word searches, crossword puzzles, treasure hunts, fun quizzes and more.
At Lake Forrest Prep, we encourage parents to participate in activities with their child to promote learning and development. Do these activities together to help your child better understand why the U.S. Constitution matters. Have fun and have a happy Constitution Day!
