All of us learn, process and retain information differently – the same goes for your child. Each child has their own unique way of understanding and taking in the world around them. This is called their learning style. There are several learning styles, such as visual, auditory, read/write, and tactile/kinesthetic. Each has their own defining characteristics and qualities that dictate how a child comprehends their environment. Here are the different learning styles and why they’re important to your child’s education:
Visual
Visual learners take in the world around them through observation. Images, graphs, charts, and maps are a visual learner’s best friend. They also learn by closely watching the actions and demonstrations of others around them. These children often have very active imaginations and vivid memories. The key element for visual learners is to picture things. Help your visual learner by creating a visual image or demonstration of what you’re teaching them, and watch as their brains expand into their own little world of learning!
Auditory
Auditory learners are sometimes also called verbal learners, and they learn through verbal explanation. They need to hear it to understand it. It’s helpful for these children to listen to text, read and recite information aloud. Have some fun and try creating rhymes and other mnemonic devices, such as acronyms, to help your child comprehend and retain new information. These learners also enjoy a thorough discussion of different topics and concepts, and they appreciate being talked through whatever they’re trying to learn.
Read/Write
These types of learners grasp information through reading and writing. Even if they’re listening to an educational video, they often prefer to read the accompanying subtitles and take notes along with the video. It’s the physical act of writing that helps them understand and retain concepts better. These children generally enjoy taking detailed notes with plenty of annotations and highlights. Encourage your reading/writing learner by giving them plenty of stationary supplies, like notebooks, index cards, colorful pens, and highlighters for highly organized, comprehensive and decorative note taking!
Tactile/Kinesthetic
Tactile/kinesthetic learners learn through touch, feel and action. They have to get their hands on whatever they’re learning. They love any activity that involves using their hands, such as building, crafting and drawing. These types of learners also like to get up and get active. They enjoy physical experiences and tend to learn best through acting out a process or having some involvement in making something happen.
How to Determine Your Child’s Learning Style
The best way to determine your child’s learning style is through observation. Pay close attention to which types of activities they prefer and what sparks the inspiration or motivation in them to learn. When are they most active and attentive in their own learning? If they tend to enjoy long discussions about certain topics, they’re likely an auditory learner. If they lean towards building and more hands-on projects, they’re likely a tactile learner. It’s all about watching your child to see what floats their boat!
Why it’s Important
Understanding your child’s learning style improves your ability to teach them new things. It’s also important in helping your child better understand themselves and their unique strengths and skills. Taking the time to understand your child’s learning style fosters a meaningful way to support their learning.
At Lake Forrest Prep, we recognize every student for the individual they are and encourage a holistic approach to their learning. By understanding your child’s unique learning style, we support them in becoming a well-rounded student and individual.
