As soon as kids get home from school, the first place they head is often to the fridge to grab “brain food” before starting on homework. However, it can get tricky finding low-processed and unprocessed foods that are healthy for children. Here are a few quick and easy snack ideas that are also really healthy.
Apple Nachos
“Wait, healthy nachos?” Yes, you read that correctly! Apple nachos are a fruity, healthy twist on a relatively unhealthy staple. Thinly slice up an apple of your choice (we recommend fuji apples), and heat up a dollop of peanut butter or favorite nut butter in the microwave for 30 seconds. Drizzle the nut butter on top of the apples, add a bit of cinnamon and salt on top, and you’ve got apple nachos!
Rainbow Fruit Salad
This is perfect for kids with a sweet tooth. Slice up fresh fruit of your choice — kiwis, watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe — and toss them together with blueberries and canned mandarin oranges. Add a splash of orange juice to the fruit to prevent browning, combine and serve. Fruit salad is a great healthy snack for the whole family.
Energy Bites
If your kids prefer more of a savory option, try whipping up a batch of these protein-filled energy bites. Combine oatmeal, creamy peanut butter, protein powder, chia seeds or flax seeds, chocolate chips, and honey. Roll the mixture into small balls, and place on a baking sheet. Freeze for 1 hour, and then place the balls in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator until you’re ready to eat them. They keep up to 3 months, but they’re so tasty that your family won’t let them last that long.
