5 Essential Rules for Summer Safety

Summer is a time for fun, adventure, and making memories. However, it’s also a time when safety needs to be a top priority, especially for children. At Lake Forrest Prep, we care about the well-being of our students both inside and outside the classroom. Here are five essential rules to help parents ensure their kids stay safe this summer.

1. Sun Safety is a Must

The summer sun can be harsh, and protecting your child from harmful UV rays is crucial. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on your child’s skin before they head outdoors. Reapply every two hours, or more often if they’re swimming or sweating. Encourage your kids to wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing. Additionally, try to plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense.

2. Hydration is Key

With higher temperatures and increased physical activity, children can easily become dehydrated. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is for kids to drink water before, during, and after any physical activity. Avoid sugary drinks and sodas, which can lead to dehydration. For children involved in sports or strenuous activities, consider drinks that replenish electrolytes, but remember, water should be the primary source of hydration.

3. Swim Safely

Swimming is a favorite summer pastime, but it requires vigilance. Always supervise children around water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or the ocean. Enroll your child in swimming lessons if they haven’t learned to swim yet. Teach them about water safety, including not swimming alone and recognizing the signs of drowning. Ensure they use appropriate flotation devices if needed. Even proficient swimmers should be cautious and always swim with a buddy.

4. Play it Safe Outdoors

Summer is perfect for outdoor adventures, but safety precautions are necessary. Equip your child with the right gear for activities like biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading. Helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads can prevent serious injuries. Teach your kids about road safety rules, such as looking both ways before crossing the street and using designated bike lanes. For hiking or camping, ensure they have essentials like bug spray, a first-aid kit, and plenty of water. Remind them never to explore alone and to inform an adult of their whereabouts.

5. Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are exciting but can be dangerous if not handled properly. Attend professional fireworks shows instead of using fireworks at home. If you do use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area and follow all safety guidelines. Keep a safe distance, never allow young children to handle fireworks, and supervise older children closely. Even sparklers, which seem harmless, can cause burns and injuries.
